Anyways... This Christmas we are taking a trip to visit my brother. We have to drive and it is going to be a very long drive. I thought it would be good to have a social story about traveling in the car for a long period of time - how we can play games, read, and even nap in the car. Also things like how we can ask to stop if we have to go to the bathroom and how we will be stopping for lunch at restaurants... things like that.
Additionally, we will be staying at my brother's house which is a very different environment from where we live. We have a very structured home environment and my brother's house is very chaotic. It isn't a bad thing, it is just two different styles of living. So we are working on social stories now for traveling a long distance in the car as well as staying at my brother's house and how that may be different (including the fact that he has a dog).
We're even going to make one for going to the zoo because Bug has never been to a zoo before and that is high on our list of to-do's while there.
And since social stories were on my mind today, I did a little googling and found some great ones for other areas of our lives. I thought I would share the links with you:
- From Slater Software there is a list of free downloadable social stories if you scroll down to the bottom of the page - I really like their stuff!
- Also from Slater Software is their list of freebies that is full of goodness.
- And from the Watson Institute I found a few good things. This wasn't my favorite site, but it is still a good resource.
If you are a homeschooler I really can't stress this enough - Keep your kid on an IEP regardless! This is how you will still qualify for services within the school district - It's a good thing!

I hope this isn't the brother that made you have that uncle visit ya. When your brother's family visited you it was chaotic. Since your brother has a dog be ready to leave a a moments notice. I would stay home.
